The format was re-programmed by the FEDA Assembly to form four preliminary group where winners qualify to the grand finale. Español Barcelona, runners-up from 1968, failed to qualify losing to Gran Canaria 3½-½. Tarrasa fought hard only to cross the line first by a fraction ahead of Unión Graciense. Four winners were: Schweppes, Barcelona, Gambito Valencia and Tarrasa. In the final group Tarrasa and Schweppes, the two leading teams met in the final round. Tarrasa needed to beat Schweppes had they dreamt of the title, yet the Madrid team easily dominated the pitch to force four draws and win their second Spanish team championship, without even losing a single game. Tarrasa lost only one game in the preliminaries. Impetú, Gran Canaria and Español won respective consolation groups and qualified to the 1970 championship. |
