With barely six women's teams arriving to Italy the event was scheduled to be two board double round robin. A brief look at Elo tables told everything in respect of first position. With two 2350 WGM players (both are Soviet expatriates actually) Italy were a dead cert for a win. As for places 2nd - 5th it was a four horse race, only with Switzerland fielding two unexperienced novices to be clear outsiders. Germany took off impresively scoring four match wins in rounds 1-4, while Italy dropped two draws vs Austria and Hungary. In the closing day of the first cycle Italy matched the leaders. Not only they failed to score a win, but they actually struggled to tie a match! Halway results: Germany 9, Italy 7, Hungary 6. The revenge cycle started with unfortunate loss for Germany who were down by Hungary by 1½-½. In round 8 Italy only drew with Slovakia but Germany dropped one match point with poor Switzerland as Schöne deservedly lost to De Seroux. With two rounds to be played standings were as follows. Germany and Italy 12 (Germany in front by 0.5 game point), Hungary 10, Slovakia 8. On penultimate round both Italy and Germany won by 1½-½. It was all about final Italy-Germany clash. While Germany needed just a 1-1 tie to retain the lead the host team had to win to take the trophy. German hopes turned more than faint. The Italians ripped their opposition apart with two brisk victories to take final trophy. Hungary came in third ahead of Slovakia. The Italians scored three best percentage results: Zimina 6/8, Ambrosi 3/4 and Sedina 5½/8. |
