Tournament review

There were 10 women's teams participating in the 4th edition of the Mitropa Cup held in Szeged, Hungary. Hungary, privileged as hosts, fielded as much as 4 potent teams. Szidónia Vajda of Hungary (2407) was the top seed and the only IM to appear in the women's contest. Slovenia, winners from 2006, came with the same duo as previously (Rožič, Novak). The on-the-paper favourites were Hungary "A" and "B", though.

The competition was very tight all time long. The top four teams (Hungary "A" and "B, Slovenia and Slovakia) dominated the rest. With one day to go Hungary "A" were in the lead at 12 points, half of a point ahead of Slovenia and a clear point ahead of Hungary "B" and Slovakia who had to face each other on the closing day. The Germans held Hungary "A" to an unexpected draw, paving Slovenia's win to fourth Mitropa Cup win in a row, but the Slovenians failed to beat Hungary "C" to finish in second place. Slovakia drew with Hungary "B" to take third place on match point count.

Szidónia Vajda of Hungary "A" and Mária Ignácz of Hungary "B" scored 8/9 both to produce best individual results. Sarah Hoolt of Germany (2226) scored horrible 2/9 to draw her team down to 9th place (compared to silver medals a year before).
