Tournament review

There were 13 teams participating in the 3rd Championship which was held in sunny, cozy Balatonlelle again. The competition was even stronger than last year, there was a GM (Berkes), three +2500 players and more than a dozen 2400s. Poland were most notable newcomers. Ukraine, led by IM Efimenko (2559!) were the top seeds.

The outcome of the games was more than surprising. Ukraine lost to third seeds Yugoslavia on day two, but the latter were destroyed by surprise Romanian team 4-0 in round five. On penultimate day leaders Romania faced runners-up Ukraine and held them to a 2-2 draw to retain one point advantage. On the last day Romania halved with Hungary but this proved ample achievement as Ukraine barely tied with Poland to stay at second. Germany took bronze medals, half of a point against favoured teams of Hungary and Yugoslavia. There were no exceptional individual achievements. Best players scored 4½/6. Lupulescu scored 5/7 at top board for Romania.

Interesting games

Beautiful finishing move killed Black on spot.
Berkes, Ferenc (HUN) - Wojtaszek, Radosław (POL) 1 - 0

A 350 point difference could not be seen. Well-deserved win for Black.
Predojević, Borki (YUG) - Can, Emre (TUR2) 0 - 1

Such long-standing pressure on the King must have been depressive.
Murariu, Andrei (ROM) - Sitnikov, Anton (UKR) 1 - 0
