Tournament review

Five teams took part in the third edition of the Nordic Cup, again played in Großenbrode (only Finland did not arrive). Best teams were West Germany led by IM Hecht and the titleholders Sweden with IM Andersson at top board. The Swedes took off with a thumping 5-1 v Norway. The Norwegians then beat Denmark and West Germany, to pave Sweden's way to defending the 1971 win. Denmark beat West Germany in the last round's battle for second place. Norway lost the field losing sensationally to the home side of Schleswig-Holstein on the last day of their play.

Best individual results were achieved by Jaan Eslon (3/4) and Ulf Andersson (2½/3) of Sweden. Gertrud Renz of Germany was best on women's board.

This excellent game is probably Auchenberg's best ever effort.
