Tournament review

There were as much as six teams in the closest ever Nordic event held again in the cosy seaside resort Großenbrode. Top four teams finished within one point. As Norway beat leaders Denmark in the last round's top encounter Sweden moved up to top position beating Schleswig-Holstein 4½-1½. Now, Germany needed to score 5½ points v Finland to level on point with the leaders. They were in 4½-½ lead and Wasnetsky was a piece up on women's board but she failed to convert her lead to a win leaving the team on fourth spot. Had only their star IM Gerusel (2410) scored little more than pathetic 1p/5 they would no doubt have repeated the 1970 triumph.

Sweden's success (although it is not common for a victorious team to lose 2 matches out of five) based mostly on IM Anderson's excellent play (only player to score 4½ points), alread World's highest class player at a time; and Kinmark's 4/5 scored at board #3. Other notable results: Gertrude Renz - 4/5 at women's board and Arne Zwaig - first at third board.

Interesting games

1 e4 e5 2 d3!? is quite interesting opening, no doubts.
Haahr, Merete (DEN) - Vuorenpää-Landry, Sirkka-Liisa (FIN) ½ - ½

Shortest decisive game (too aggressive!).
Payne, Robert (SHN) - Runau, Ralf (GER) 0 - 1

Double fianchetto in the very beginning is *not* common.
Andersson, Ulf (SWE) - Gerusel, Mathias (GER) 1 - 0
