Tournament review

El Club Ajedrez Alcoy of Alicante were the hosts of 1965 and the strong home team showed true superiority over the rest, with two internationals Díez del Corral and Calvo perfoming very well on top boards. Scoring a thumping record of 10 match wins and barely one loss (v Tarrasa) they came first at 30½ points, three and a half of a point ahead of the chasing bunch. Tarrasa, Chardenet and Barcelona (who were missing GM Pomar) crossed the line at 27 game points and 15 match points each. The podium was decided then by direct score v each other, which produced the following sub-table: Tarrasa 5½, Chardenet 4½, Barcelona 2. The two remaining teams to gain automatic qualification to the 1966 finals were Real Madrid and Español, multiple medal winners from previous years, who were unable to chase the medal zone without their top players García Orús and P.Puig.
