The premier edition of African Team Championship, organized by African Chess Union, took place in 1993 in Cairo, Egypt, where two domestic teams picked top two spots, while Algeria came third. It took four years as the championship was held in Cairo again (July 15-26, 1997), won by Egypt ahead of Morocco, with participation of the following teams: Egypt "A", Egypt "B", Morocco, Algeria, Mauritius, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria. GM Hicham Hamdouchi was highest rated at 2535. The event disappeared from the calendar following the 1997 event only to appear back in 2009, but the championship scheduled for autumn in Mozambique was cancelled. See also
