The idea of the women's Mitropa Cup was inspired by the traditional men's competition started back in 1976. The premier edition took place in 2002 in Italy, headed by Mr. Agostino Scalfi. This one was not played at the same time and in the same place as the men's event. Slovenia won a two board round robin tournament. Starting from 2005 the men's and women's tournaments have been played simultaneously. Each team comprises of two players and up to one reserve. Slovenia won both in 2005 and 2006. Vesna Rožič is the only player to win two Mitropa Cup titles.
