Tournament review

Commemorative plaqueThe International Esperanto Chess League (originally known as Esperanta Ŝak-Ligo Internacia) organised the very first Esperantist Olympiad in the Hungarian city Kalocsa, 20th - 29th July 1983 celebrating 70th anniversary of Esperanto activity in the city. There were players from 9 countries: Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Malta, Poland, Romania, USA, Hungary and the Soviet Union. There were separate groups for men and women. There was even a commemorative plaque installed in memory of this event (see photo).

Tournament logoMen's Czechoslovak team were clear favourites boarding three titled players but Poland took surprise lead after three rounds. Czechoslovakia moved to the nose then finishing in well deserved first. Hungary beat Poland 2½-1½ in the direct clash for silver. Hungary won women's competition (no titled players, but a few masters) ahead of Czechoslovakia who tied on points with Poland but took silver medals by virtue of direct match result (2-0).
