Lombardy and Weinstein decided not to play in the interzonal. Bisguier entered as substitute since Reshevsky refused to participate and Sherwin could not give up his professional duties.
It is not clear why 3rd spot was awarded to Benko. Possibly he was selected on a basis of his win in the 1961 US Open Chess Championship.
