The championship was also a zonal. Top four qualified, but Botvinnik was World Champion and Keres, Smyslov and Bronstein were already qualified for 1953 candidates' tournament.
It is unclear why the Soviets sent Kotov and not Aronin to the interzonal. Possibly there were no strict rules.
