Tournament review

White Rose emerged the winners after a hard fought season in the 4NCL Division 2. In view of a restructuring of the 4NCL which will see Division 1 expand to 16 teams, there were four promotion places and many teams recruited new players.

White Rose fielded a titled player throughout the season with GM Colin McNab, GM Peter Wells or IM Jan Teplitzky on top board. The team from Yorkshire lost just one match, to Pride and Prejudice and conceded just one 4-4 draw to South Wales Dragons.

A lovely game, after Black loses a pawn in the opening he is never given the chance to organise and even with most f his pieces on the back row White creates strong threats.

On Saturday I reported on the success of White Rose who won the 4NCL Division 2.

Three other teams including Pride and Prejudice were also promoted to Division 1. This was Pride and Prejudice's third straight promotion.

The first two were achieved with seven female players plus GM Aaron Summerscale on top board. This season the team was strengthened with the addition of GMs John Emms and Chris Ward but the majority of the players are still female.

A win for Summerscale who employs a funny opening called the Clarendon Court. It was popularised by GM Jonathan Levitt who named it after the block of flats in North London where he was residing at the time.

White Rose won last year's 2nd Division and were promoted with Bristol, Pride and Prejudice, and South Wales Dragons.
