Tournament review

Playing hallThere were nine postal and telecom teams from all over Europe participating in 15the SCIPT championship in Portugal. Poland were as usual seeded as no. 1 with GM Schmidt at top board. Dutch telecom was totally different team than that from 2003 championship with no real prospect for grabbing the second title. Potentially strong were Hungary telecom and Dutch post too.

Netherlands P took early lead ahead of Switzerland P/T and Hungary T. The Netherlands P beat Poland P on day 4 by 3-1 moving into sole lead, while Hungary unexpectedly lost to Netherlands T. The Poles recovered defeating leaders Switzerland on day six while Holland P tied with Hungary T. Standings after six rounds: SUI 9 (yet to bye), NED/P 9, POL/P 8, NOR/7.

Round seven say the Netherlands P beat Switzerland P/T in the leaders' clash and Poland P ran over Norway by the same 2½-1½ margin. From then on, it was a two horse race for a win. Holland P defeated Norway 3½-½ on penultimate to keep safe one match point and 3½ game points advantage over Poland P. A brisk 4-draw tie vs Poland T secured Dutch historic win, the first one in 15 Championships, all of them they dilligently participated. Poland P took silver while Switzerland T/P came in third.

All of Dutch players but the top board achieved best results at respective boards. Best individual results were achieved by Schmidt (POL/P), In 't Veld and Schwartz (NED/P).

Interesting games

A neat trap. Black naively believed he just won a pawn.
Schmidt, Włodzimierz (POL) - Van Gool, Henk (NED) 1 - 0

Both sides created tangible mate threats but all in all Black refuted all the danger.
Lund, Arne-Birger (NOR) - Schwartz, Arie (NED) 0 - 1
