There couldn't be, and really wasn't any real surprise in the third GCC team championship as unbeaten Qatari team took their third consecutive title winning all six matches to finish at 22 game points. Top two boards, GM Al-Modiahki and his Chinese-born wife GM Zhu Chen scored 6 out of 6 both. Silver medals came to UAE who only needed to score 1 point in their last round's struggle v Bahrain to retain second position, and their won 3-1. Bahrain came third and their fourth board H.Ayyad won prize for best result at board #4 scoring 4½/6. The final order was Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, the same as in 2005 and 2006. Oman and Saudi Arabia, two remaining GCC members, did not appear internationally so far. |
