Tournament review

The game hall The 25th Mitropacup was held in Brno (a.k.a. Brünn in German) with co-operation of the Czech Chess Union and Lokomotiv Brno Chess Club. There were 10 teams participating with Czech Republic "B" replacing absent Austrian team. Experts called Hungary and France as favourites and Croatia and Czech Republic "A" as potential contenders. All in all, Hungary, who played with just four men, won an extremely tight contest scoring 21½/36 half of a point ahead of the Czech Republic "A" team and Croatia. The Hungarians had to retain the lead as they faced Croatia in the last round. Bérczes' loss vs Bosiočić was compensated by Papp who defeated Brkić to hold the Croats to a draw. France finished barely in 7th, as their leader GM Degraeve came late and missed some opening rounds. Best individual result was achieved by Brkić (7/9). Cvek of the Czech Republic obtained his GM norm.
