That Turkey becomes centerfield of youth chess is no more a secret to anyone. The Denizli Youth U16 Olympiad is no exception. The hosts fielded as much as eight (!) decent teams, including girl's and club team. Seeded second, the Hungarian boys tallied an impressive 29½ point out of a possible 40 and won the championship after playing steadily throughout. The silver medal went to top seed Ukraine, who beat Turkmenistan in a last round by a 3-1 margin. The Indian youngsters had to come up with an inspired performance against Greece in the last round as only a victory by a huge margin could have ensured them the medal as Russia, the fourth finisher, was just half a point behind them before the last round. The Indians did their job perfectly and grabbed bronze medals. The top seeds from Russia had to console themselves with fourth position. |
