Tournament review

The 2002 Mitropa Cup was held in Leipzig as part of celebrations of 125th anniversary of DSB (Deutscher Schachbund - German Chess Federation). The 10 European teams played the round robin tournament. The home side (GM Lutz, GM Hübner) were the favourives together with Slovenia (GM Beliavsky, GM Pavasovič) and Switzerland (GM Kortschnoj!). The tournament hall the the conditions of play were more than decent, as most of participants stressed.

The German team, supported by ChessBase, were in the lead for most of the time, but succumbed to Slovenia on round 7 and lost the win by the narrow margin. Promising new star IM Döttling scored fantastic 6½/8 (Elo 2671!) on board #4 for Germany, but tournament's best was Beliavsky's 6/7 (Elo 2843!). Winners Slovenia conceded barely one game loss (Mohr vs Hungary).
