Tournament review

The 4th edition of Russian premier league had little luck. Due to continuous financial constraints three out of top four teams from 1995 withdrew. There were just 8 teams in the pool (so none was facing relegation!) and only two fully professional: host Ladya Azov and Tattransgaz-Itil Kazan. First days might suggest Kazan are to take the throphy since Azov unexpectidely lost to Rostov-on-Don team, based on teenagers and women (Matveeva). However round 4 saw one of most spectacular knock-downs in the history of the league: Azov wiped out then holders of European Club Cup by incredible margin 5-1! It was all over and Ladya took historical title with ease. Underestimated Don-SDYuSShOR Rostov-on-Don took bronze and qualified to the 1997 edition of European Club Cup (they did not participate, however).
