All the teams were split into two preliminary groups, then top three from each group qualified to the championship final, while the rest were put in the consolation group. Results from preliminaries were carried over to the finals.

Time control: 40 moves in 2 hours, then 20 moves in 1 hour, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game

Tournament review

This was the very last Soviet Spartakiad and one of last Soviet sport events ever played sine USSR was dissolved in December 1991.
