Tournament review

There was a three year long gap between the two Clare Benedict editions as 1975 and 1976 contests were cancelled due to fund shortages. Denmark hosted the tournament for the very first time. There were four GMs among 39 participants and the top two were Larsen (2615) and Andersson (2565). England and Denmark were major sides according to the Elo tables.

The host team led by GM Bent Larsen (5½/7) took rather convincing win scoring five wins and two draws consecutively, while England came second one and a half point behind. Sweden's +1 (contributed mainly by Ulf Andersson) was ample to take third place. Spain's reserve Martín González scored 5½/7 to find himself within GM-zone with Elo performed at 2601.

Interesting games

16. Nxf7?! was tempting but proved incorrect.
Janetschek, Karl (AUT) - Andersson, Ulf (SWE) 0 - 1

No doubt Ulf Andersson would have coped well with this ending.
Calvo Mínguez, Ricardo (ESP) - Andersson, Ulf (SWE) 0 - 1

A noteworthy case: Black in zugzwang in abundance of free space on the board.
Hartston, William Roland (ENG) - Wahlbom, Magnus (SWE) 1 - 0

Tactics test: find winning manoeuvre
Webb, Simon (ENG) - Schüssler, Harry (SWE) black to move
Eising, Johannes (GER) - Janetschek, Karl (AUT) black to move
