Tournament review

All teams came with strongest line-ups except ex-national champions Schweppes who were missing top three boards (Díez del Corral, Torán, Calvo). Canaries team led by GM Larsen won as expected, but they suffered heaviest defeat ever in round 2, losing to Terrasa 3½-½. Pomés' win over Larsen on top board was awarded beauty prize. Terrasa were well shaped but did not manage to pick the title; they lost tournament lead in round 5 losing to Schweppes 3-1. Third place went to Olot, with their second board Colombian IM Castro scoring impeccable 8½/9. That weakened Condal team was relegated along with Espanyol, was little, if any, surprise.
