Tournament review

All of nine member countries of the European Economic Community took part in the premier edition of the EEC Chess Team Championship. The squads were not so bad. Holland sent a team of decent IMs, while Great Britain (with Scottish and Welsh players at top boards) had a bunch of promising newbies. There was also a GM (Mariotti from Italy). Only West Germany sent a team very far from their potential.

The Dutch team went throughout the event undefeated and fully deserved the win. Denmark had good winning chances until they got caught by the Netherlands on day five with a dreadful 3½-½. Great Britain had good prospects in the middle phase but their finish was poor (two loses and a draw vs Italy in the last round to push them down to third). Italy took fourth place and West Germany fifth, but the margin was very big.

The Netherlands won four prizes for best individual results out of five possible as they conceded only two game loses. The best result was achieved by Ligterink at board #4 (6/7).
