Tournament review

With West Germany still to enter the competition the Netherlands led by ex-World Champion Euwe were the strongest side in the pool. The only potential contenders were the hosts fielding three IMs and England, who did so well in recent Olympics. The Brittons gave horrific display, winning onle one game out of 20 to finish in miserable 5th. Switzerland and Holland were in share lead after three rounds with the Dutch wiping out the Swiss 4-0 on penultimate day to grab top spot. Switzerland came in second, while Austria took third.

The Dutch won 11 games and drew 9 (no game loss!). All of their four men took prizes for best individual result at respective boards.

Interesting games

This game is true mind-refresher. A piece of good, romantic chess from 19th century.
Wade, Robert Graham (ENG) - Bouwmeester, Hans (NED) 0 - 1

Remember famous Fischer-Reshevsky game, US Ch 1958?
Wade: "11.Ne6!! was found by me after I had played 5...Na5
and I had the dubious satisfaction of showing Bhend that he had missed 10.e5!+-"

Bhend, Edwin (SUI) - Wade, Robert Graham (ENG) 1 - 0
