Tournament review

The very first Mitropa Cup took place in late 1953 in Vienna and was actually cities event. Powerful Belgrade team fielded GM Trifunović and IM Milić at top boards while Vienna had promising newbie Robatsch at top board along with the living legend GM Grünfeld at board #3. Belgrade took easy win defeating closest contenders Vienna 2½-1½ on penultimate day. Karl Robatsch scored 4½/5 to produce best individual result.
