The so-called "Ist International Student Tournament" took place in Liverpool, 1952 as a response to a growing need to stimulate student chess world. It happened to be a prototype of the Student Olympiads and as such it must not be omitted here. Eight players from five countries arrived, including two extremely strong Soviet masters. They drew on day one and then took six consecutive wins each co-winning the tournament with remarkable score 6½/7. They edged out Oleg Pastuhoff, who came third, by a gigantic margin of three points! The event was very successful and the parties agreed the consecutive students meeting will be held next year.

It is necessary to add that the event was primarily planned to be a team competition, but since only two teams arrived on time (the Soviets came late because of visa problems) it was decided just to run a brisk mini team event before individual tournament actually started. Added to two teams previously mentioned was an International Team: Winants (BEL), Katragadda (IND) and Dinsen (DEN).
