Tournament review

There was no championship in 1958 and six teams qualified through regional championships on to the 1959 final. Spain came in impressive 9th at the Munich Olympiad the year before. From that team, Real (the strongest team in the field) fielded two players, Barcelona one and Chardenet one. However, round two saw quite big surprise as Español beat Real 4½-3½:
Monedero-Pomar 0-1, P.Puig-Torán ½-½, García Orús-Díez del Corral 1-0, Ballbé-Sicilia ½-½, Sánchez-Arrupe 1-0, F.Puig-Quelmadelos ½-½, Gracia-Menvielle 0-1, Viadé-Roldán 1-0.
Sadly Español dropped 2½ point v poor Valencian team and it proved not enough to overtake Real by game points. So Español became the first and up to date the only club in the history of Spanish Clubs to win all matches and not to win the championship.
